Open hearts, open doors
“I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut” (New International Version 1984,
The first door of opportunity for 2017 has just opened! The JASCO Giving Hope Foundation (JGHF) has awarded OJPM a $100,000 matching grant. For every new dollar that OJPM receives in 2017, JGHF will match one dollar up to $100,000.
This means that if an existing donor increases his or her monthly donation from $50 to $75, JGHF will match the $25 monthly increase with $25 a month, thus doubling the increased giving.
If a friend of OJPM who has not given to our ministry prayerfully decides to donate $1,000, JGHF will match that donation with $1,000. Whether an existing donor gives extra or a new donor gives initially, any new dollar will be matched.
Last month I spoke of responding to open doors of ministry. I asked for your prayers and obedience in responding to open doors of ministry in 2017. This is the first specific request that needs your prayer and obedience.
It is one thing to pray for an open door; it is another to walk through the door. This is the first door of opportunity in 2017 that God has laid before us.
This matching gift is first in chronology. Steve Trice, chairman of the board of JASCO Products Company, informed me of the possibility of this gift in January and confirmed it in February. Such a marvelous way to start out a new year of ministry.
This matching gift is first numerically with the possibility of becoming the largest gift OJPM has every received. This is an opportunity that will challenge us to clarify our vision. With money coming in that will double our bank balance the vision of OJPM needs to be kept front and center. This campaign will strengthen our existing foundation and will expand our reach into new county jails (I need to save that for another column).
This matching gift is first providentially with the effect of doubling many gifts this year. This is a ‘God thing’ that has a clear theological basis. Building a reasonable bank balance does not discount faith. Luke 14:28-30 with the building of the tower provides just one example where the Bible teaches that faith and wisdom are complimentary and not contradictory.
This matching gift is first organically as it will serve as seed that will produce much fruit in expanding our donor base and our financial foundation. OJPM has a great foundation of faithful monthly donors. This group includes volunteer chaplains, friends of OJPM, churches and businesses. For ministry to open up in new county jails and for more inmates to be touched with the gospel our financial foundation needs to be broadened.
The first step is usually the hardest as comfort fights to let go of its grip. The first step can also be the most exciting. The scope of this first step is more like a push from God. I am praying that you join with me in opening your heart so that God can open doors. Remember, open doors means more open hearts!
